    сущ. фрегат - (гол. fregat), трехмачтовый парусный корабль XVIII - XX вв. с полным корабельным парусным вооружением. Первоначально на брушприте был блинд, позже добавили кливер и бом-кливер, еще позднее блинд убрали, а вместо него установили мидель-кливер. Экипаж фрегата составлял 250 - 300 человек. Корабль многоцелевого назначения, использовался для сопровождения торговых караванов или единичных судов, перехвата торговых кораблей неприятеля, дальней разведки и крейсерской службы. Артиллерийское вооружение фрегатов до 62 пушек, расположенных на 2 палубах. От парусных линейных кораблей фрегаты отличались меньшими размерами и артиллерийским. вооружением. Иногда фрегаты включались в боевую линию и носили название линейных.
